Introduction

The joystick of a controller is an important piece to certain controls and movement within a video game. It can suffer from many defects, one of the most notable being joystick drift. It can cause your movement within video games to be altered without making it do so, and it could sum up to a frustrating experience.

The purpose of this guide is to allow avid gamers to fix their controller’s stick drift without disassembling their controllers, ultimately risking breaking their controllers completely within the process.

Before utilizing this guide to fix your controller, make sure to not connect the controller to any external source, specifically a power source such as a charger.

On Step 5, make sure to have the compressed air spray at air level to not add any moisture. This could possibly hinder the controller and make your joysticks too loose.

  • Dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol.

  • Let the controller dry for about 10 to 15 minutes.

  • Spray compressed air around the base of the joystick to further remove any dust or debris.

  • Press forward on the thumbsticks for 30 seconds.

  • Press down on the joystick and move it 360 degrees clockwise and counter-clockwise for 30 seconds.

  • Turn on the console to begin rebooting your controller.

  • Press the tip of a small paper clip into the reset button on the back of the controller and hold for ten seconds.
