Step 1

              How to jump start a 2010 Honda Insight               
  • Make sure that both cars are turned off.
  • Pop open the hood of the Insight by pulling the lever located here:

Step 2

  • Open the hood by reaching under the hood (in the front and center) and pulling the lever.

  • Lock open the hood by grabbing the rod and inserting it into the hole on the under side of the hood.

  • Open the hood of the secondary car, and lock it up into place (with spring-action rod if necessary).

  • Grab your jumper cables.

  • Locate the battery in both the Honda Insight and the secondary car.
  • The battery always has a big red plastic part that will indicate the positive terminal.

  • WARNING! DO NOT LET THE LEADS TOUCH EACH OTHER OR ANY OTHER METAL!
  • Attach the RED lead to the secondary car’s battery where the positive (RED) terminal is.

  • Attach the other RED lead to the positive (RED) terminal of the Honda Insight’s battery.

  • Attach the BLACK lead to the secondary car’s battery where the negative terminal is.

  • Attach the other BLACK lead to the grounding strap located here:

  • Start the engine of the secondary car and let the engine run for 1-2 minutes.

  • Start the engine of the Honda Insight and let it run for 2-3 minutes.
  • NOTE: If your Insight does not start at this point, let the battery charge for a few more minutes.

Step 13

  • After the Insight has successfully started and has been running for a few minutes, remove leads in reverse order of attachment.
  • WARNING: DO NOT LET THE LEADS TOUCH EACH OTHER OR ANY OTHER METAL!
  • It may appear in this photo that the battery cables are incorrectly hooked up to battery terminals on both vehicles. Make sure to follow the earlier instructions regarding using the grounding strap on the Insight instead.

After the Insight has successfully started and has been running for a few minutes, remove leads in reverse order of attachment.

Step 14

  • Drive the Insight for at least 30 minutes before turning it off again to ensure a full charge of your battery.
  • NOTE: You may also simply let the engine run for 30 minutes rather than driving.

If your car still does not run after all of this, call a mechanic because you may have a bigger problem than a dead battery.

Where should you clamp the black lead if using a portable jump starter and cable won’t reach the grounding strap? Thanks!
