Introduction

Before beginning the fix, make sure the carpet and the sample piece are clean. Some homes have extra matching carpet leftover; however, carpet can always be purchased at a home improvement store.

What you need

  • Place a can over the hole.
  • The can should completely cover the hole.

  • Press down firmly on the can.
  • Cut around the can with a utility knife.
  • Utility knives are sharp, so handle with care.
  • Only cut through the carpet. Do not cut through the carpet pad underneath.

  • Remove the can.
  • Lift out the old carpet.

  • Flip sample carpet onto its back and place down on a stable surface.
  • Place the can onto the sample carpet.
  • Trace the shape of the can with a marker.

  • Remove the can from the sample carpet.
  • Cut out the shape from the sample carpet using scissors.
  • Kitchen scissors are sharp. Always cut away from yourself.

  • Check to make sure the replacement piece of carpet fits into the hole.
  • If necessary, trim sample to fit or cut another piece.

  • Evenly spread glue on the underside of the replacement carpet.
  • The carpet should be placed down before the glue dries.

  • Place the glue side of the carpet down into the hole.
  • Press down firmly on the carpet with your hand.
  • Let glue dry before using the carpet.

  • Trim carpet fibers to blend the replacement carpet with the original.

Once the glue has dried the carpet can be walked on or vacuumed. By cutting the longer carpet fibers the replacement patch should seamlessly blend in with the original carpet.
