Introduction

This style of forklift is quite common in warehouses, and the gas tanks frequently run dry. This is an OSHA compliant step by step guide to safely replace an empty propane tank.

While changing the tank, you will need to wear the the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Please be sure to acquire a pair of goggles and a pair of propane resistant gloves before beginning this project.

Step 1

Put the shifter in neutral, turn the engine off, and engage the emergency brake.

Put on the gloves and goggles.
Turn the shut off valve clockwise to close the empty tank.

Disconnect the truck’s gas hose from the tank’s forklift adapter.

Look at the rack securing the tank to the truck.
Push in the latch on the left-hand side while simultaneously pulling the entire rack back towards you.
This allows the rack to swing out from the truck, creating space for you to release the much larger latch holding the tank to the rack.

Release the latch holding the tank to the rack.

Remove the empty tank.

Position the new tank in the rack so that the forklift adapter is facing away from you.
This is to make sure the adapter and gas hose will line up once the rack is reconnected to the truck.
If needed, rotate the latch clockwise/counterclockwise before closing to loosen/ tighten the latch.
Some tanks may vary in width.

Clamp the tank to the rack.

Secure the rack to the truck.

Carefully screw the gas hose onto the forklift adapter.
It is important to keep the hose and adapter straight while tightening. If the alignment is askew, the hose will not tighten all the way and may cause liquid propane to leak from the tank once opened. This can potentially cause frostbite if in prolonged contact with bare skin.
Please be sure to wear the required PPE to protect your hands and eyes in case of leakage.

Once you are sure the connection is secure, turn the shut off valve counterclockwise to open the tank.

Crank up the forklift.

If done properly, there should be no drips or hissing, and little to no smell of propane. The engine should start at once.
