‘’The keyboard is broken and won’t type.’’

Before removing any keys and checking for technical problems, make sure there is no physical debris inhibiting your keyboard from working correctly. Identify the problem keys and check under and around them. Use a can of compressed air to safely clean it. (CAUTION: compressed air can cause frostbite! Keep fingers away from the stream.) If there are any sticky substances, slightly wet a q-tip with rubbing alcohol and gently clean the affected areas.

’’The device begins to overheat during long periods of usage.’’

While using your device keep your device on a sturdy, level surface. This will allow your device to “breathe” while you’re using it. Also be sure to keep the vents uncovered to avoid anything from blocking the air trying to circulate throughout the device.

Overheating is commonly caused by a buildup of dust around the fan and/or the heat shield of the device. To fix this problem you don’t have to disassemble your device. Be sure to completely power off the device and disconnect the AC adaptor before you begin. Purchase a can of of compressed air and spray into the vents located on the side of the laptop to remove any dust accumulated.

If the device continues to overheat after cleaning and allowing proper ventilation in the device, there may be a problem in with the hardware. To test your device for hardware failure go here for Windows 8 and up, and here for Windows 7. If any hardware failure occurs, replace the bad piece or contact HP for assistance.

‘‘There is no audio playing from your speakers.’’

Check to make sure you did not accidentally mute the volume or turn it down too low. Check in the lower righthand corner to see if the audio is muted. There will be a picture of a speaker with an ‘X’ through it. To fix this either click the volume slider or press the volume up button on your computer’s keyboard.

The audio device could be malfunctioning, or it could have a faulty jack or connection. Check the wire from your audio device to the audio port located on the side of laptop to see if there are any cuts in the wire. After you have checked this thoroughly, check that the jack is plugged in to the correct port and snug. The jack should ‘click’ into the port labeled by a headset. If there is still no audio, try another audio device like a pair of headphones, a wired speaker, etc. If the problem is resolved, then the previous audio device does not work correctly.

The audio mixer can be accessed by right-clicking on the speaker icon in the lower right-hand corner. Upon opening the mixer, look at all applications and devices and increase their volumes to 100%.

Right-click on the speaker icon in the lower right-hand corner and click on ‘Playback Devices.” Double-click the box that says either “Speakers” or “Speakers and Headphones.” Next, click on the tab that says “Advanced.” From here, click the drop-down box beneath “Default Format” and choose various frequencies until the audio issue is resolved. Be sure to click “Apply” and then “OK.”

If the audio drivers are out of date, they must be updated. To do this, you must first open the Start menu and search for the “Device Manager.” Scroll down and click on the drop-down arrow next to “Sound, Video, and Game Controllers.” Right-click on the “High Definition Audio” option and click “Update Drivers.” Search automatically for updated driver software and install the new drivers if you are prompted to do so. If you do install new drivers, restart your computer after you’re finished.
