Powering on the computer results in an error result, or slow load.

The maximum capacity that your battery can hold will change over time. To check the condition of your battery, you will need to run a diagnostic test. In the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows section, click Download Diagnostics Windows. Once the Diagnostics Windows is opened, you will select Run as administrator. From that point you will click Components Test > Power > Battery > Run Once.

The diagnostics test will check that the battery is running properly and allow you to run calibration if necessary. Calibrating the battery will reset the battery gauge giving you a more accurate display of the charge level of your computer. Once you have completed the test, the Battery Check page should let you know the condition of your computer and whether or not you will need to replace your computer. If the battery has failed the test, the next step will be replacing the battery by following this guide.

This is one of the most common and frustrating problems to occur and can be caused by internal and environmental factors. Occasionally, turning the device on and off could solve this problem. If not, there are other actions to be taken such as replacing it. Backing up the hard drive prior to it failing is always a good option.

If after testing all the above components your computer is still not responding, there may be the larger problem of Hardware failure. To check this, HP provides diagnostic software that enables users to test hardware components on their computer, allowing them to rule out any hardware failures. Begin by downloading the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows, which will allow you to identify any hardware issues that may be present. Next, click System Tests > System Fast Test > Run once. After running the Fast Test and no errors are found but your computer is still exhibiting symptoms of a hardware problem, please run the Extensive Test. Once this test is completed and a component is found to have failed the test, you will need to write down the 24-digit failure ID code number to have readily available when you contact HP Customer Support.

Powering on the laptop results in a blank screen.

Attach a external monitor and restart the computer. If an image displays on the external monitor, there might be a graphics driver conflict with the notebook LCD display. With the external monitor connected, go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page to download and install the latest graphics and chipset drivers for your computer.

If you can hear sounds of operation, such as fans, but no image is visible, it may be an issue with the computer BIOS. To fix this first turn off the computer. Then, make sure the computer is connected to a power source. Once you have done this, press and hold the Windows key and the B key at the same time. While still pressing the windows key and b key, press and hold the power button for one second, then release all three keys. The power LED light remains on, and the screen remains blank for about 40 seconds. You might hear beeping sounds. Eventually, an HP BIOS Update screen displays, and the BIOS update begins automatically.

A loose memory module can cause blank screen issues. To resolve this, remove the memory module and put it back. This will provide a better connection so the computer can recognize the memory. You can find a guide on how to do this here.

The laptop builds up too much heat during use.

Dust inside the laptop can cause the laptop to overheat. If vents become clogged, the fan can not properly cool any heat generating parts inside the laptop. Luckily, it is not always necessary to open the laptop to clean out dust. Instead, a can of clean, compressed air or a hair dryer on the cool setting should do the trick. By removing dust from your computer, the air flow will improve and the device is able to cool, making less noise when operating. Should you need help locating vents, we have included pictures to help you identify them easily. If cleaning out the dust does not help your computer to cool down, please continue reading.

Caution: Make sure to turn off and disconnect your laptop from the charger before spraying with compressed air.

Sometimes laptops can become overheated due to poor ventilation. If clearing the dust from the vents did not work, overheating could be caused by other obstructions to the vents. The fix this problem, please provide your computer with at least 5 inches of clearance around the vents and place the laptop on a sturdy, level surface. If this does not help your computer to cool down, please continue reading.

High room temperature can often cause overheating of the device. Relocate to a cooler room in the house or office to ensure the device can cool down. If this does not help your computer, please continue reading.

Hardware components might be damaged if the above tasks do not help the problem. Please run the diagnostic tests as explained above in the Power/ Start-Up Malfunctioning under Hardware failure. If any hardware has failed, you may need to replace the bad component.

System is slow or unresponsive throughout use.

Random Access Memory (RAM) unfortunately begins to wear down over time. If your HP 15-f004dx frequently freezes, reboots, or brings up a BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death), the RAM may be what is causing the problem. In order to figure out what exactly the problem is, you will need to run diagnostic tests as explained above in the Power/ Start-Up Malfunctioning under Hardware failure. Once determining that the RAM is causing the issue, you may need to replace it all together. In order to do this, you will need to find the product number for your computer, typically located on the bottom of the laptop itself or the box it came in. After finding this, check to see what type of memory the computer has, the maximum amount of memory the computer can use, and the amount of memory your operating system can support. Then, you are able to begin the replacement process following this guide.

The keyboard or touchpad is stuck and/or not working properly.

Begin by feeling the keys. Are they stuck/sticky? If so, you may need to remove the keyboard using this guide, clean the keys and replace them following this guide. If the keys are not sticky, but still do not appear to be communicating with the device, continue reading.

Start by restarting the computer. Then press the esc. key repeatedly to see if the Startup Menu pops up. If the Startup Menu does not display, the integrated keyboard has malfunctioned and needs to be serviced or replaced. You can use an external USB keyboard in the meantime. If the Startup Menu does display, press F10 to open the BIOS settings. Press F5 to restore the factory BIOS settings, then F10 to confirm the changes. Restart the computer again, if the keyboard works in windows, you’re done! If not, continue reading.

Click Device Manager under Devices and Printers. Click View, then select Show Hidden Devices. Double click Keyboards, and select uninstall. Finally, restart the computer and the keyboard should be working properly.
