No matter what, you can’t get your computer to turn on.

If pressing the power button won’t turn the computer on, flip the computer over and check to make sure the battery is fully connected to the computer’s battery port. If you are unsure, remove the battery and reconnect. You should hear a firm click. See the last step in Battery Replacement for instructions.

If your computer still won’t turn on, plug in the computer. This will check if your battery does not have charge. If your computer turns on, you had a dead battery.

If your computer doesn’t turn on, make sure it is plugged into a direct AC power source/wall outlet and not a secondary source like a surge protector or power strip. Attempt to turn on your computer. Plugging it in will check if the problem is with the power source and not with your battery. If your computer turns on after plugging into a working power source, the issue was with the secondary source, and not your battery. Replace your secondary power source.

If your computer won’t turn on, it’s an issue with your battery and it will need to be replaced. The battery is “Hewlett-Packard SPS-418867.” You can find replacements online or at select electronics stores. See Battery Replacement for instructions.

If your computer was recently charged for an excess of hours, days, etc. there is a chance it will not turn on. Performing a forced reset will help to solve the issue and turn the HP on. To do this you unplug the AC adapter from computer and remove the battery. Then, proceed to hold down the power button for 15-30 seconds. Plug back the battery and AC adapter and computer will restart when power button is pressed.

Computer won’t wake back up.

Not all computers are the same. Some PCs or notebooks take longer to start back up compared to others. Give your computer a chance to turn back on.

Most of the time either people don’t charge their computer enough or they charge it too much. Doing either can really mess up the battery life, leaving your computer powerless. Try charging the battery for 30 min, then checking on it. If that doesn’t work, remove all batteries, wait a few minutes, and then replace the batteries. If that doesn’t work then as a last resort the battery must then be replaced .

Your computer unexpectedly shuts off.

If your computer shuts off during use, try plugging it in to see if the computer will turn on. If it does, your battery simply ran out of charge. If it doesn’t, you have an issue with your battery and it will need to be replaced. The battery is “Hewlett-Packard SPS-418867.” You can find replacements online or at select electronics stores. If your computer shuts off after unplugging it from a power source, try plugging it back in to see if the computer turns on. If it does, your computer was low on charge and shut down after it was unplugged. It needs to be charged. If it doesn’t turn on, you have a faulty or worn out battery and it will need to be replaced. Everything else seems to be running, but there is still a dark screen.

Sometimes you may forget to turn the brightness up if the screen is dark. Check to see if the brightness is all the way down and try turning it back up.

If your computer is on but the screen isn’t working, you have a faulty LCD. You must then install a replacement screen.. There are 3 components to the LCD assembly, the LCD Panel, CCFL Lamp and LCD Inverter. The LCD Panel is the display/ images on the computer screen. The CCFL Lamp provides the light to the display, and the LCD Inverter transfer/ reroutes power to the CCFL Lamp. The CCFL Tube may have burnt out or broke leaving the screen with a dim display. This part must then be replaced.The LCD Inverter may have broke stopping power from going to the CCFL Tube leaving the display dim. This part must then be replaced.

Computer screen is stuck on one image.

Check RAM chips. Damaged RAM chips can cause random or sporadic freezing and trouble when booting. RAM chips can cause problems when replaced improperly, the contacts get dirty, or the speed and size are incompatible with the computer. Refer to Replacement of RAM for instructions.

Defragment hard-drive and check for corrupted sectors (most operating systems have a built-in disk utility). Check for software updates or any files on your computer that may have become corrupt. If needed, wipe hard-drive and reinstall operating system.

Avoid using laptop on any insulative materials. Check the vents and any openings for dust. If possible, disassemble and blow out thoroughly. If problem persists, check thermal grease on CPU and wiring to system fans.

You notice pixels on your screen that are faulty or not functioning.

If you notice dark black dots that look like squares up close, your screen has dead pixels that will no longer function properly in the LCD. You may want to replace your screen to fix this problem. See Replacement of Screen.

If you notice individual dots of different colors than their surroundings that look like squares up close, your screen has damaged pixels that will no longer display certain colors or only display one color. To fix these problems, you may want to replace your screen. See Replacement of Screen.

You experience static, dropped/faulty communication when using the bluetooth.

If you experience static or sparse communication, you may simply have poor signal from your bluetooth device to your computer. Attempt to re-establish connection or wait for a better signal between the devices..

If your bluetooth won’t repeat the sounds made from your end of the device or produce sound through its end, you may have an issue with your computer’s bluetooth module, and it will need to be replaced. Consider finding a replacement bluetooth module. You can find replacements online or at select electronics stores. See Replacement of Bluetooth Moduel for instructions.

You go about your normal tasks and realize that your computer performance decreases over time.

Close software that you are not using to conserve the system’s processor speed and available memory. Having multiple tasks open at the same time such as the internet, music, and virus software can slow the computer speed down.

If the laptop is running slowly after connecting to the internet it could be due to the installation of adware or spyware programs. Adware or spyware programs install unwanted information onto your computer and upload information in the background. To remove them, scan for viruses and software by using antivirus security software. When viruses/spyware are detected, remove them.

Sometimes adding RAM, the computer’s memory, can help to increase system performance especially if the system is older. Refer to Replacement of RAM for instructions.

Your computer doesn’t read or play any CD’s/DVD’s.

If no option screen pops up when a disc is inserted, your computer’s settings may have been modified to prevent option screens from displaying when discs are inserted. Try accessing “My Computer” on your Windows desktop and searching for the CD/DVD on the left hand column. There should be a disc icon near the name of the disc. Double click the name, and your disc data will open.

If your disc is not visible on the “My Computer” window, you may be missing drivers or have outdated drivers. Consider downloading the most current drivers for your computer from the HP website directly. After installing drivers, restart your computer and retry inserting your disc.

If you get an error message upon inserting a disc, your lens may be damaged. You may need to replace your optical drive. New optical drives for you computer may be purchased directly from HP or from an electronic retailer. See Replacement of Optical Drive for instructions.
