When the power button is depressed, the laptop power indicators and lights do not respond

Plug power adapter into side port and make sure light indicator is ON. Press power button ON and allow the device to boot into Windows. Select and Click on the Start Menu and then select Control Panel. Go to Performance and Maintenance>Power Options. Select the Power Meter tab. If the power meter is low, allow it to charge up to 100% before unplugging the device.

Plug the AC adapter into the side port. If the light indicator does NOT illuminate, gently pull the cable out and try and re-insert it into the port. While inserting, check for the indicator light. If it still fails to illuminate, check the connection from the power block to the wall socket. Secure these connections and check for the light. If it still does not illuminate, the power socket has a fault and replacement is recommended.

If your battery will not charge fully, the AC charging adapter could be faulty. To test, ensure that all connections from the wall to the charging adapter are secured and then power on the device. Select and Click on the Start Menu and then select Control Panel. Go to Performance and Maintenance>Power Options. Select the Power Meter tab. If the Power Status does not indicate that it is charging, the adapter is failing and should be replaced.

The battery charge indicator is found by following these directions: Select and Click on the Start Menu and then select Control Panel. Go to Performance and Maintenance>Power Options. Select the Power Meter tab. If you have verified that the AC adapter is good and charging the battery but you unplug the laptop and it does not stay ON for at least 5 minutes and the indicator falls dramatically, the battery should be replaced. Follow this link to the replacement guide.

If images are not displayed or are distorted or there is damage to the screen

If there is not an image on the display but the power button light is illuminated and flashing, the laptop may be in sleep or standby mode. Press the space bar key to wake the device. If the image does not appear, press the power button to wake the device. If the device still does not display an image, press and hold the power button for 3-5 seconds to perform a hard shutdown. Press the ON button again to begin the boot up process. You may have to select the “Start Windows Normally” option to proceed to the desktop.

To replace a shattered screen, please follow this guide.

The keyboard keys appear damaged or are missing

To replace missing keys, a key replacement kit must be purchased. Once this has been accomplished, follow the link to the replacement guide.

Keyboard is failing to enter text or respond to function commands

If a password is required to login, make sure the password text box is selected and try to enter your password. If no characters or keys are working, select the shutdown option using a mouse or the touch pad and allow the device to completely power down. Press the power button and allow the device to power on. Try entering the password again or entering text. If no text appears or the keyboard is still not working, refer to the following replacement guide.

Log into Windows. Select and Click on the Start Menu and then find and select Control Panel. Select Performance and Maintenance>System. The laptop power button is pressed and the laptop stops before logging into Windows

Power the laptop OFF. Wait approximately 3-5 seconds and then power the laptop back ON. If the laptop fails to boot properly and only a flashing indicator in the upper left portion of the display is flashing OR an error message regarding the HDD is displayed, refer to the replacement guide.

Beep codes will be generated from the laptop speakers in the event of a memory module failure. If beep codes are present at POST, and the laptop will not boot up normally, refer to the following guide to replace a memory module.

No sound is coming from the speakers

Log into Windows. Select and Click on the Start Menu and then find and select Control Panel. Select Performance and Maintenance>System. On the System Properties window, select the Hardware>Device Manager. Check to see if there are exclamation points next to any devices. If there are exclamation points displayed on the sound devices, refer to the HP driver website to install the proper sound card driver.

To verify if the MUTE option is ON, boot to Windows, look at the lower right corner of the task bar for the sound icon (it resembles a speaker). Click the icon and DESELECT the option next to MUTE. Test sound again to verify the speakers are working correctly.

The CD or DVD is not working correctly

If a CD or DVD is inserted into the drive bay and the auto-run feature does not start the content, open Windows Explorer by double clicking the My Computer icon located on the desktop. Browse to the proper drive letter and double click it to open the content.

If you can open the CD/DVD drive, verify that the tray is unobstructed and clean. Insure the drive is closed completely while in use and aligned properly. If you cannot open the drive, restart the laptop and try again. If the drive still fails to open, refer to the replacement guide to extract and replace the unit.
