Laptop battery dies shortly after charging.
If your laptop doesn’t charge past a low level or if it shuts off unexpectedly after you have charged it for several hours, manually calibrate the battery. It involves fully charging, draining and recharging the battery, followed by running the battery test. If the test shows that the battery isn’t working, replace the battery using this guide.
If the battery is not charged, plug in the laptop. Leave it plugged in for at least a few minutes before trying to power it on again. If it doesn’t power up, or if it powers up, but the battery icon shows that it is not charging, remove the battery using this guide.
If the laptop won’t start up even when the device is plugged in, check the power supply. Power supply issues can be easily mistaken for other startup issues. Plug the power cord from the device into a power outlet. Press the power button and check the small light and fan on the power supply at the back. If the light does not turn on and the fan does not spin, there is probably a problem with the power supply.
When all or some of the keys are pressed, they do not perform the desired action.
If nothing happens when any keys are pressed, replace the entire keyboard using this guide.
If some keys are not responding at all or only responding occasionally, check whether they are stuck. Try cleaning the faulty key switches with a cotton swab. If it doesn’t work, remove the key, clean the surface and place the key back. Turning the laptop upside down and gently tapping the underside of the keyboard might also help remove dust or debris. Be careful not to hold the laptop directly over your head while doing this, to avoid getting dust in your eyes.
The Num Lock key turns a portion of the keyboard into a number pad. This will result in unintended results when typing. To switch modes, press the Num Lock key again, and check whether the issue persists.
Keyboard language corresponds to the operating system language for the region where it is purchased. Check if the device has been switched to another language. This issue can be resolved by selecting the ‘keyboards and languages’ tab, then clicking ‘change keyboards’.
Laptop stays static, and the screen turns black or displays colored lines for several minutes. Sometimes the screen flickers.
A loose memory module might be a reason for the static screen with a non-blinking cursor while updating. Resetting the memory module might solve the issue.
If the screen stays black for several minutes after powering up, check whether the device is in sleep mode. If the laptop takes time to return from sleep mode, check the AC power source and the power light. Try restarting the device. If the issue persists, replace the screen using this guide.
If the screen is blank, check the display driver. If the screen is not static, but it flickers, check the Task Manager, and see if the display driver is updated. Meanwhile, check if the display has more than one type of connection available such as VGA, DVI, or HDMI. If so, try a different type of connection. If the issue persists, replace the screen.
Check the video cable connections and ensure they are not loose. Go to the ‘Factory Reset’ and check the connection setting. If the connection is loose, tighten the connection screws.
If there are patterns, lines, or colored shapes, the problem is the screen. Go to the ‘Factory Reset’ and check the ‘On-screen Menu’. If the issue persists, unplug the video cable between the device and the display. Check the ends for bent or broken pins. If any pins are damaged, replace the cable.
Laptop fails to boot, but instead displays ‘drive not detected’ when turned on. This is common after dropping a laptop onto a hard surface.
Most HP devices have self-monitoring hard drives. However, hard drive failures happen occasionally, so it is always advisable to backup personal files in advance. On an HP machine, you can run a hard drive test to check for hard drive errors. If that does not work, the hard drive may be faulty. Replace the hard drive using this guide.
If your laptop turns on but won’t boot, this could mean that there is a problem with the hard drive. Sometimes a failed disk in the hard drive makes a clicking sound, or sometimes your computer will notify you that a disk is failing. Check to see if Windows (or whichever other operating system you’re using) is installed. If the option is available, boot in ‘safe mode,’ then run a virus/malware scan to see if there’s an external cause for the malfunction. Make sure the operating system has been updated to the most recent version, with all security and stability patches. If any new software was installed recently, uninstall it, in case there was some incompatibility that caused the crash. If the problem persists, try reinstalling the operating system.
There is a sudden pause of games, louder fans or black screen
Heat build-up can damage internal components of a device. A common cause is the accumulation of dust inside the device. HP laptops have vents placed near the case that facilitates free air flow. Once these vents become clogged, air cannot flow around the cooling fan blades which in turn gets hot. If there is a sudden pause of games, louder fans or black screen, check the heat inside.
High ambient room temperature can cause overheating. Other possible reasons are software settings that cause the system to generate excess heat (such as overclocking), and, in extreme cases, malfunction of the motherboard or other essential hardware. If you are concerned about overheating, and it is not corrected by cleaning or checking software settings, take the device to a professional to avoid further damage due to heat.
