The laptop will not turn on or only turns on when plugged into a power adapter (wall outlet).
Make sure the power adapter is plugged in and the charging light is on. If the light is off and the adapter is plugged in, try plugging the adapter into a different wall outlet. If there is still no power, the adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced.
Plug in the adapter and check that the charging light is on. If the laptop only powers on when the adapter is plugged regardless of charging time, then replace the battery.
Ensure the power adapter is plugged into a working wall outlet. If the adapter has already been replaced and the computer still will not boot, replace the motherboard.
The battery will not recharge to full capacity, even if charging for longer than recommended.
Ensure the power adapter is plugged in and the charging light is on. Make sure the laptop is accepting charge from the cable and is outputting the proper charge. If the light is off, and the adapter is plugged in, try plugging the adapter into a different wall outlet. If there is still no power, the adapter is faulty and a new charging cable must be purchased.
If the battery is unable to charge to full capacity after checking and/or replacing the charging adapter, then replace the battery.
The fan is excessively loud or creating a high-pitched noise.
Overheating problems can cause your fan to work harder and spin at higher speeds to cool the CPU which can create a lot of noise. Make sure the vents to the laptop are not blocked, place the laptop on a hard and cool surface (a desk or table will work, but not blankets or near areas of high heat). Ensure the vents are clean of dust by spraying a dust cleaner into the vents.
If the laptop refuses to turn on and shows an error message indicating an issue with hardware, this may be an indicator of a faulty hard drive. The hard drive can be replaced with this guide.
If a high-pitched noise can be heard as the fan speeds up, it may be due to a damaged bearing. If a bearing is damaged, replace the fan.
The keys on the keyboard won’t respond.
Turn off the laptop and remove AC power if plugged. Press and hold the power button for more than 60 seconds. Allow the notebook to startup as usual. If this fails to solve the problem, try the steps below.
Turn off the computer and then restart it. Press the Esc key repeatedly to see if a startup menu opens. If a setup menu does not open, the integrated keyboard hardware is not working and the integrated keyboard in the notebook should be serviced or replaced. To continue using the laptop, connect a USB-wired keyboard to a USB port and restart the computer. If a setup menu opened and the keys worked in the startup menu but failed when windows loaded, try the step below.
When the setup menu opens, use the arrow keys to navigate the menus. If these keys are working in the startup menu, but then fail when Windows loads, the problems is related to the keyboard software. Restart the computer. Once the computer reboots, open the Device Manager and then uninstall and reinstall the keyboard software as follows.
In Windows, search for and open Device Manager. Click View and select Show Hidden Devices. Click the arrow next to Keyboards, right-click the keyboard device name, then select Uninstall to remove the device from Windows. Continue removing device names in the Keyboards category until all device names have been uninstalled. Restart the notebook. Right-click Start, select shut down or sign out, and then select Restart. The computer operating system software or hardware has errors. The laptop may be running slowly, acting strangely, or be unresponsive. There may or may not be an error message.
Overheating can cause the laptop to crash and display an error message indicating an overheat. Allow the laptop to cool down by placing it in a well-ventilated area. Make sure the vents to the laptop are not blocked, place the laptop on a hard and cool surface such as a desk or table. Do not place the laptop on blankets or near areas of high heat. Ensure the vents are clean of dust by spraying a dust cleaner into the vents.
If your computer crashes during normal operation, memory-intensive tasks (video games, multiple tasks opened). This means you have faulty RAM or low RAM. Replace the RAM in your laptop using this guide. If a new RAM card was purchased and installed, but the computer now refuses to turn on, check that the proper card has been purchased for this model laptop.
The time on the laptop has to constantly be reset upon startup.
If your computer can’t remember the time after your computer restarts, it’s possible the system did a hard reboot. This can occur if you update your operating system. If this is the case, change the configuration settings on your computer to reflect the current time and connect to the internet to restore location settings. If your computer can’t remember the time every time it reboots, however, this is more than just an operating systems issue and your notebook’s CMOS battery is dead. Replace the battery with this guide.
Experiencing trouble hearing sounds on the laptop.
Check the audio through the laptop speakers, then test it using headphones. If the audio is gone only while listening through speakers, the speakers may be experiencing an issue. Examine the speaker on the laptop and see if there’s any item or dust on the speaker. If the speakers are clean and still refuse to work, try the following step.
Make sure that the audio icon at the bottom right on your desktop is not muted and is set to play through the laptop speaker. If the problem persists, move on to the next step.
In Windows, search for and open HP Support Assistant. On the My devices tab, click your computer. Click the Troubleshooting and fixes tab, and then click Audio Check in the One-click fixes section. Click Next, and then wait for the audio test to complete. Review the test results on the audio and microphone diagnostic results display, and then click Test Audio. If sound is not heard correctly, click Unable to Hear Audio and then follow the on-screen instructions. If the audio issue persists, continue to the next step.
In Windows, type find and fix audio into Search, or right-click the speaker icon on the taskbar and select Troubleshoot sound problems. Select Find and fix audio playback problems or Find and fix audio recording problems from the Search results. Click Next. Select the device you want to troubleshoot, and then click Next. Wait while the troubleshooter detects problems and makes changes (or prompts you to make changes). When the troubleshooter is done, the Troubleshooting has completed page displays, listing any problems found and what changes were made to the computer. Click Close. If a recommended action displays, select Apply this fix or Skip this step to continue to search for other problems. Test for sound. If the audio problem persists the speakers may be faulty and need replacement.
If you are connecting a headset to the laptop and no audio can be heard, disconnect the headset from the laptop. Plug in the headset again, if sound can be heard, try cleaning the audio outlet on the laptop and headset plug with a cotton swab or soft brush. If no sound could be heard, it could be a problem with the headset, try using another headset or headset cord. If the problem persists, it could be a problem with the audio outlet and it may need replacing.
The laptop is losing connection with Wi-Fi, slow in connecting, drops connection, or unable to connect at all.
